The mission of the Boys & Girls
Clubs of Western Lane County is to benefit all
youth ages 6-18 by inspiring and enabling them
to realize their full potential as productive,
responsible and caring individuals.
THE CLUB AND ITS
MEMBERS
Our Club operates on a year-round
basis. By providing programs after school, on
weekends, during the summer and school vacation
periods, we build the trust of our youth, enabling
them to depend on the Club and its activities.
A wide range of adult-supervised activities
and services are offered, all for a minimal
$25 annual fee. If for some reason the
youth of their family can not provide the annual
fee, scholarships are available. No youngster
is ever turned away for failing to meet the
$25 membership fee.
FIVE CORE PROGRAM
AREAS
CHARACTER AND LEADERSHIP
DEVELOPMENT empowers youth to support
and influence their Club and community, sustain
meaningful relationships with other, develop
a positive self-image, participate in the democratic
process, and respect their own and others' cultural
identities.
EDUCATION AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT
enables youth to become proficient in basic
educational disciplines, apply learning to everyday
situations, and embrace technology to achieve
success in a career.
HEALTH AND LIFE SKILLS
develops young people to engage in positive
behaviors that nurture their own well-being,
set personal goals, and live successfully as
self-sufficient adults.
THE ARTS enables
youth to develop their creativity and cultural
awareness through knowledge and appreciation
of the visual arts, crafts, performing arts,
and creative writing.
SPORTS, FITNESS, AND RECREATION
develops fitness, positive use of leisure time,
skills for stress management, appreciation for
the environment, and social skills.
BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB
BASIC PRINCIPLES
BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS OF WESTERN
LANE COUNTY:
are for boys and girls. We have
boy and girl membership and satisfy the
age-old desire for boys and girls to have
a Club of their own;
have full time, professional leadership,
supplemented by part-time workers and volunteers;
require no proof of good character and
are open to all boys and girls;
have low membership dues so that all
boys and girls can afford to belong and
none will be deterred from joining;
are open to boys and girls of all races,
religions, and ethnic cultures;
are nonsectarian;
have an open door policy so that all
members can attend at any time during the
hours of operation;
provide a varied and diversified program
that recognizes and responds to the collective
and individual needs and interests of boys
and girls;
are guidance-oriented. The Boys
and Girls Clubs help young people to develop
a system of values related to family, community
and country, and make appropriate and satisfying
choices in their physical, educational,
personal, social, emotional, vocational,
and spiritual lives.
What Makes a Boys and Girls Club Special?
Four key characteristics define
the essence if a Boys and Girls Club.
All are characteristics in exerting positive
impact on the life of a child.
The Boys and Girls
Club is a place -- an actual neighborhood-based
facility -- designed solely for
youth programs and activities.
The Club is open
every day after school and on non-school
days when kids have free time and
need positive productive outlets.
Every Club has full-time,
trained youth development professionals,
providing positive role models and
mentors. Volunteers provide
key supplementary support.
Clubs reach out
to kids who cannot afford, or may
lack access to, other community
programs. Dues are low, $25
per year.
WE GET RESULTS
In neighborhoods with strong
Boys and Girls Clubs, the incidences of
teen pregnancy and substance abuse are cut
by as much as 50 percent.
Kids who belong to Boys and Girls Clubs
have a better chance of completing school
than kids who do not. Nearly 90
percent of Club members graduate from
high school, compared to only 66 percent
of all young people in America.
Two out of three Club Alumni
go on to careers as professional managers;
proprietors; or skilled workers; and Club
Alumni earn an average of 39 percent more
than the average American.
"Too many people feel like they
can't make a difference, but I'm
telling you this:
Put this card in the hand of a child,
and you will change that child's
life. Do that and you can
change the world.
It's up to us. Support the
program that works. The Boys
and Girls Club, the positive place
for kids."
